What does the hoodie mean to you? This Saturday from 17:00 to late the exhibition The Hoodie opens at Het Nieuwe Instituut. One of the highlights of the opening programme is a series of talks with curator Lou Stoppard and Malique Mohamud of Concrete Blossom, the Rotterdam collective that is organising an accompanying programme throughout the city. 'Hoodie films' will be shown and there is a space for reflection where you can contemplate some of the issues dealt with in the exhibition. Later this evening, storyteller Melanin Shangó Kris will inspire you in The Poetic Exhibition. Guest performers are invited to interpret the exhibition and share their sentiments about the hoodie, including poet Brooklyn Mozes, dancer Chanel Vyent, performer Josimar Gomes, violinist Shauntell Baumgard, pianist Almar Nooitmeer and drummer Tim Bennett. Music by DJs Evelyn Rae and P4BASICS. RSVP via link in bio. Credits Devan Shimoyama.

Lou Stoppard

The hoodie tells many stories that define our times – tales of social inequality, youth culture, subculture, police brutality, racism, privacy, fear and, in turn, style. With its roots in sports clothing and workwear, the hoodie as we know it today was popularised by Champion in the 1930s as a practical solution for workmen. It is now, arguably, western fashion’s last truly political garment – a garment that can incite fear, jealously, camaraderie and even fury in others – as well as being a garment you can lose your life by wearing. The lingering question posed by the hoodie is simply: ‘Who enjoys the right to wear one without challenge?’ More information via link in bio. Credits: Model Adut Akech draagt Balenciaga in 'The Earthwise Issue' van i-D, najaar 2018. The Hoodie exhibition considers the role of a fashion garment as a socio-political carrier. The hoodie is a staple of contemporary dress, hyped as a trend and a must-have item; but elsewhere it is also a topic of moral panic, banned by certain institutions and dissected by the media as an emblem of inequality, crime or deviancy. Curated by writer and curator Lou Stoppard. The exhibition runs from 1 December 2019 to 12 April 2020 at Het Nieuwe Instituut. More information via link in bio. Credits: EUnify by SOUVENIR OFFICIAL.
